Impact of climate change and climate extremes on the agriculture and forestry in the Europe-Russia-Turkey region

General Information

The ongoing climate change has widespread and consequential impacts all over the world, including increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climate and weather events. Despite positive impacts in some regions of Europe, Russia and Turkey, future warming will create multiple risks for natural and economic systems, in particular for agriculture and forestry sectors. Decision-makers in the European Union, Russia, and Turkey are interested in a comprehensive, scientifically based assessment of the consequences of observed and future climate change for these sectors that, in turn, target an efficient use of adaptation and mitigation options. The AFTER project aims therefore at bridging this scientific assessment on the one side and user / stakeholder demands on the other side. Concretely, the main goal of the project is the assessment of impact of observed and future climate change and subsequent changes in climate extremes on the agriculture and forestry in the Europe – Russia - Turkey region and the contribution of changing agriculture and forestry to climate mitigation and adaptation. The project will set-up a solid database of current and future changes in special climatic indicators (forestry and agriculture) and changes in climate and weather extreme events based on CORDEX-CORE and new high-resolution REMO and ALARO-0 regional climate model projections over the study region. Furthermore, AFTER will investigate the feedback loop that agriculture and forestry can provide to climate change mitigation and adaptation. An online database will be created via an interactive website to support the development of decision relevant climate information for selected regions, e.g., North-West Russia, Siberia, etc.
AFTER is funded in the frame of ERANET RUS Plus (‘Strengthening STI links between Russia and the European Research Area'), which is an ERANET Cofund scheme of Horizon 2020 of the European Commission.
