Neutron scattering

Team WPN

Members of the WPN department

Future materials innovation requires a profound understanding of materials properties as well as of the manufacturing and ageing processes. The “Neutron Scattering” department operates several experimental stations at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich, where neutrons can be used to analyze a wide variety of materials—ranging from the interaction of individual atoms to a macroscopic component. For example, this makes it possible to understand the subtle ageing processes in a material or to observe how hydrogen behaves in novel storage materials. This is an important contribution toward developing renewable energy technologies for a decarbonized industry.
